Audiovox 7 string
Old guitar has a horseshoe magnet inside with a thin steel blade showing
through the coverplate. It really has a good sound……..except right at the center string. Sounds weak there. Frustrating.
Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I’ve heard tell of re-magetizing
the magnet. I don’t know how this differs from the Rickenbacker.pickup, but
certainty doesn’t have the over-arching bars.
I really like playing it. Using an early Music Man 115.

It's not the magnet; if it were, all the strings would be weak. Most likely, the coils are too far apart and neither is picking up the middle string.

If it a traditional horseshoe, which most are … the blade is actually a “keeper”, yolks N and S … lines of force stay within the circuit.
If you run a probe along a keeper , starting over one flange (ex N 200 gauss)
It decreases rapidly to Zero in between the flanges … then become increasingly more south until it’s right over the opposite pole (ex S 200 gauss) .
When they come thru here, I redo the orientation of the horseshoe … turn it into a magnet where one pole is the curve (south) and the two flanges are the same-polarity (both north).
The steel blade no longer functions as a keepe, the blade yolks like poles … and the output is raised a lot for all strings .
You can do this at home with a big neodymium iron boron magnet,I can tell you how if it’s something you wish to do

Re: Audiovox 7 string
Aloha!
Easiest way to KNOW whether it is a real Horseshoe Magnet, or a "Fauxshoe" Magnet (like the original pups on the Jerry Byrd 8 string frypans made by Shot Jackson), is to just put a piece of metal on the horseshoes.
A paperclip will do. Place the paperclip on the horseshoe. If you feel magnetic pull, it's real. If you don't, it's a Fauxshoe.
Hope that helps!

Re: Audiovox 7 string
It's a real horseshoe magnet, just not configured like a Rickenbacker.

Re: Audiovox 7 string
Thank you all for the help.
Rick I would like to try that magnet process.
Not ready right now, but will let you know!
I’d like to post pictures, but can’t seem to figure it out .
I sure like this old Audiovox.
And it’s a part of History!
